2019 – 18ct yellow gold, Mozambique blood red garnet.
Whilst I was in Kyoto learning about Urushi, I also learnt how powerful and loaded the colour red is in not only British or Italian culture, but in Japan an the world at large. I lost my Mothers red ruby ring which was given to her by her Mother several years ago. I never told her as I felt so terrible for losing it/ it being taken. I searched for years for that ring and finally I decided to make one that is not the same, but takes the classic red and gold combination.
Exploring the idea of ‘blood line’, ‘inheritance’ and the passing down of jewellery, the simple title ‘Mother’ invokes feelings for everyone. Also the sense of loss can be overwhelming, but rather than looking for that which is irreplaceable, the only way is to create something new. Weather that’s literal or metaphorical.
